Payslip AI Assistant

How to use the Payslip AI Assistant to understand pay, deductions, tax, pensions and changes between payslips.

The Payslip AI Assistant helps you understand the figures on your UK payslips in clear, everyday language. It uses information from the payslip you select and, when relevant, your earlier payslips to explain what changed.

The assistant is currently in beta. It can give you a useful first explanation, but it does not replace advice from your payroll, People or pension team.

Why we built it 💚

Payslips bring together gross pay, tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and other deductions. It is not always clear what each figure means or why take-home pay has changed.

We built the Payslip AI Assistant to make this information easier for everyone to understand, give you a helpful first answer quickly and help you identify anything you may want to discuss with the right team.

Before you begin

  • Your company must have the Payslip AI Assistant enabled.

  • You need at least one payslip available in Givver.

  • The assistant can only access your own payslips.

If you cannot see the Payslip AI Assistant under Quick Actions, ask your internal People or payroll team, or your Givver contact, to check whether it is enabled for your company.

How to find and use it

  1. Log in to Givver.

  2. Open Quick Actions in the left-hand navigation.

  3. Select Payslip AI Assistant.

  4. Your latest available payslip appears in the Payslip Viewer. Use the arrows to choose a different pay period.

  5. Select one of the Quick Questions, or type your own question in the chat box.

  6. Press Enter or select the send button.

You can ask follow-up questions in the same chat. Select New chat when you want to start a fresh conversation.

Questions you can ask

For the clearest answer, ask one specific question at a time. Here are some examples.

Tax and PAYE

  • “Can you explain the tax deduction on this payslip?”

  • “What does my tax code mean and how does it affect my pay?”

  • “Why did I pay more tax this month?”

National Insurance and other deductions

  • “How was my National Insurance calculated?”

  • “Why is there a student loan deduction on this payslip?”

  • “What does this deduction mean?”

Changes between payslips

  • “Why is my take-home pay different from last month?”

  • “What changed between this payslip and the previous one?”

  • “Why has this payment or deduction appeared this month?”

Pensions

  • “How is my pension contribution calculated?”

  • “What would my pension contribution be if I changed it to 5%?”

  • “How does my pension arrangement affect my take-home pay?”

Employer contributions and individual items

  • “What are the employer contributions on my payslip?”

  • “What does this payslip item mean?”

  • “Can you break down my gross pay, deductions and take-home pay?”

How the answers work

The assistant uses the payslip period you have selected. Depending on your question, it may also:

  • Compare the selected payslip with your earlier payslips.

  • Use the relevant UK payroll rules and rates to explain tax and National Insurance.

  • Use the pension arrangement and contribution information available for that payslip.

  • Give an estimate for a “what if” pension question when the information needed for the calculation is available.

Answers normally start with a short summary, followed by a more detailed breakdown. You can ask a follow-up question if you want the assistant to explain a particular point in another way.

What the assistant cannot do

The Payslip AI Assistant is an explanation tool. It cannot:

  • Change your payslip, tax code, pension contribution or any other payroll information.

  • Submit a request or make a payroll decision for you.

  • Confirm employer pension matching rules or policies that are not available in your payslip information.

  • Provide a final decision on personal financial, legal or tax matters.

  • Judge whether your pay or benefits are good, bad or in line with the market.

If you think a figure is incorrect, or you need a change to be made, contact your internal payroll or People team, or the Givver team.

Tips for getting a useful answer

  • Select the correct payslip period before asking your question.

  • Use the exact name of a payment or deduction when you can.

  • Ask one clear question at a time, then use follow-up questions for more detail.

  • You do not need to include your name, date of birth, National Insurance number or other personal details in your question.

Help us improve the beta

We are still improving the assistant’s accuracy, wording and the range of questions it can answer. Your feedback will help us understand what is useful and what needs more work.

Please tell your Givver contact or message the Givver team with:

  • The question you asked.

  • Whether the answer was useful.

  • Anything that was unclear, incorrect or missing.

You do not need to include personal or payroll information in your feedback.

Important: AI responses may contain mistakes. Check important information before making a decision and contact the Givver team or your internal payroll or People team if you need confirmation.
